...or even tremors , sometimes the ground just opens up and eats something. This day it was a bridge .
Wow - scary prospect!

@Sidonie: It's a common occurrence in these parts , though most of the time when the holes open up they are in a field or out in the woods . The many cement mills in the outlaying areas quarry stone to make their product, when they go to deep these quarries fill with water from below. The mills then set up pumps to constantly drain them into creeks .
Since we live in an area that has much limestone and underground caverns what happens is the water is transposed to the surface , even though water is fluid it offers support to the ground above. When it's gone the ground sinks to fill the void.
As residents we all know this and some have even tried legal action to stop it. But those companies know how to keep things tied up in courts forever. One thing I did find out while working at Hercules Cement from on of the regular employees is that if the bridges from a near by major highway have to be repaired once more the State is going to shut them down....It's only a matter of time now.
AMazIng shot Fred!

@Art Monkey: Thanks, this small bridge has been out for years now. From what I hear there are no plans to fix it anytime soon.
Scary. Great shot nevertheless.

@Sujit: Thanks, whats scarier is that I have two small sink holes in my yard now !
Bummer...looks like it's been that way for quite some time.
Great perspective.

@Jen: Glad you like it, I have to admit I did take a little spill while traversing that bridge lol .
You live in a weird place!

@Carol: Ha ! Weird is an understatement ! ( And it gets weirder and weirder by the moment ). But the weirdest part is we all think it's normal until an outsider points things out to us ! Weird uh ?
I think i may have used my weekly quota of the word " weird " up in this reply !
